Resistance is futile
Ironically, the technology that I once resisted is that which has allowed me to live, work and travel as I do and have done for the past six years. In past situations I have observed my reluctance to embrace a new way of doing things. Being born in the mid 1960’s, I had the privilege of growing up without technology, free to explore the world with only my senses and World Book encyclopedias.
Gradually, computers became a part of my working life, followed by the internet and now smart phones. A pattern emerges where new advances in technology quickly become a part of our everyday lives. Resistance is futile.
Looking back, I see that I was comfortable with how things were done, it had been that way for many years. The innovative technology made promises to “improve” my work experience, but this was yet to be proven.
To embrace a new way of doing things and see if it was all it promised to be, I would need to venture out of my comfort zone, my safe space, and be willing to experience something new. I would need to take a leap of faith. Turns out it was a good leap, no, it was a great leap that was life changing for me. Not only was the monotony of data entry removed from my work, but it has allowed me to work online and thus, as long as I have my computer and internet access, I can work from anywhere in the world.
There is another irony in this story. The technology which I now embrace will soon become so advanced, it will take over my job completely, rendering me redundant. When the time comes, I will need to take another leap into something new.
